Your emotional intelligence is the foundation for a host of critical skills—it impacts almost everything you do and say each day.
Studies have found 90% of top performers are also high in emotional intelligence. On the flip side, just 20% of bottom performers are high in emotional intelligence. You can be a top performer without emotional intelligence, but the chances are slim.

Consider each statement and answer as you actually are, be truthful to yourself, the results are not stored they are for your eyes only, be careful not to pick what you perceive the correct answer to be or how you would like to see yourself.

You probably have good relationships with some of your colleagues, but others may be more difficult to work with.

Self Awareness
In his 1996 book “Emotional Intelligence: Why it can Matter More Than IQ” Goleman explained that people with high self-awareness are “aware of their moods as they are having them.”
To increase self-awareness learn about Mindfulness. This involves focusing on the present moment – including how you’re feeling. And keep a diary in which you write about and analyse the emotional situations you experience from day to day.
You also need to understand your strengths and weaknesses to build self-awareness. Ask for feedback from your boss, friends, and trusted colleagues to find out how you can improve further. We also have the Developing Emotional Intelligence cards available from our shop. In this deck there are 11 question cards relating to Self-Awareness that can assist you.
Self-Regulation
Self-regulation is about staying in control. To develop your skills in this area, learn how to manage your emotions effectively.
If you often get angry, note what triggers this feeling, and think about why this happens. Learn breathing techniques used in mBIT to calm yourself down, and give yourself time to pause before you respond to emails or requests, so that you don’t say something that you’ll later regret.
Our Developing Emotional Intelligence cards have a section dedicated to developing greater self-control, each of the 12 cards have suggestions, questions and guidance on how to improve your self-regulation.
You may also be affected by other negative feelings and emotions, such as anxiety and stress. You may want to consider attending an mBIT Evolve your world course, click on the course schedules tab to see our latest course dates
Accountability is another important element of self-regulation – take responsibility for your actions and behaviours, and make sure that these align with your Values. If you are not sure or unclear what your values are you may be interested in our Values cards, these can be found in the shop and come with a downloadable handbook so that you will get the most out of the product.Motivation
Self-motivation is strongly affected by your emotions – when you’re distracted by your emotions, you may find it hard to see tasks through.
Boost your motivation levels by writing down what you want to achieve each day and by reviewing your progress, celebrating small wins – simple jobs that, when you’ve completed them, give you a sense of achievement.
Also, set yourself longer-term goals. When you decide what you want to achieve, you’ll focus on what really matters to you. This can be highly motivating, especially when you connect personal goals with career-related ones.
It may be that you are less aware of your strengths, when we play to our strengths we are more likely to enjoy what we are doing, be more engaged and successful. If you would like to find out more about your strengths then take a look at our Strengths Cards available from the shop, they come complete with a downloadable handbook so that you get the most out of the product.
Empathy
Empathy is the ability to recognize other people’s emotions and understand their perspectives. Goleman calls this aspect of EI “the fundamental people skill.”
To develop empathy, start by simply thinking about other people’s viewpoints. Imagine how they may be feeling, and use active listening skills to understand them fully when they express their emotions to you.
Our Developing Emotional Intelligence cards have a section dedicated to developing greater empathy and Social Awareness, each of the 12 cards in this section have suggestions, questions and guidance to assist you in your development of empathy and are available from the shop.Social Skills
Even if you’re not a natural “people person,” it is possible to develop better social skills.
In NLP terms what your intention is, is where your attention will be focused. Understanding that helps people develop greater people skills. A good NLP course covers communication skills, the art of building rapport, increasing sensory acuity, all of which are important in managing relationships.
